Candidate Statement

Harry Watson is professor emeritus of History, focusing his research on U.S. history between the Revolution and the Civil War. He joined the faculty in 1976 and served as director of the UNC Center for the Study of the American South for 13 years and editor of its quarterly journal, Southern Cultures, for almost 30 years. He also has been president of the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic and the Historical Society of North Carolina; a member of the Board of Advisers of the North Carolina Civil War History Center; and a member of the N.C. Historical Commission.
