UNC Service

I am currently faculty in the School of Medicine and have instructed medical students, dental students, and residents over the last fifteen years. I have directed the pathology component of the medical school Neurosciences and Gastrointestinal courses. I teach pathology residents in both daily slide review and through lectures on assorted topics in both neuropathology and gastrointestinal pathology. I am the Director of our department's Histology and Molecular Histology Labs, helping oversee a unit that performs greater than 35,000 individual surgical pathology cases every year, insuring that we provide accurate and timely diagnoses.

Candidate Statement

UNC, while having a storied past, faces uncertain prospects. Given the increasing societal mistrust of higher education and its membership, UNC should be prepared for both greater oversight and diminished resources at the state and federal level. The various UNC departments should be encouraged to develop and, if necessary, redeploy resources to foster faculty success, particularly for non-tenure track faculty who must show continued success in areas of teaching, research, and/or administration to insure re-appointment. Increased administrative help for grant paperwork and institutional review board submissions could improve grant success, while our teaching faculty would benefit from additional support as we transition further from the "textbook/lecture notes" class approach to one of Zoom sessions, AI-developed content, and YouTube.
