Candidate Statement

For most of the time since Spring 1982, I have been very fortunate to be teaching in Carolina's celebrated Creative Writing Program, directing it from 2002-2008, and twice serving as interim chair of the Department of English & Comparative Literature ('07-'08 and '16-'17). With colleague Marianne Gingher, I co-direct The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship for young writers whom we bring to Carolina and have done so since its inception in 2000; over these twenty years, we have grown the Scholarship's principal from $2M to nearly $3M. I would be honored to serve on the Financial Exigency & Program Change Committee and appreciate being nominated.
