UNC Service

My service work has significantly involved tenure, promotion, and appointments matters, including chairing the Law School’s Promotion and Tenure, Post-Tenure Review, and Appointments committees. I have also chaired the Academic Affairs and Faculty Speakers committees. I was a Steering Committee member for the UNC Business of Healthcare initiative. I coordinate the JD/MPH concurrent degree program. I served as principal investigator for a service grant awarded to the Carolina Health Law Organization. Finally, I have a secondary appointment in the School of Medicine and adjunct appointment in the Gillings School of Global Public Health.

Candidate Statement

Tenure is under renewed attack at many universities. I will vigorously defend the importance and value of tenure to UNC’s overall mission. A critical first step is ensuring that UNC has meaningful, well-understood standards that are fairly applied. In chairing tenure/appointments committees I have seen how opacity of policies creates frustration. I will advocate for more transparency, preparation, and institutional support to guide all faculty members through this crucial process. Moreover, as a Law faculty member with secondary/adjunct appointments in Medicine/Public Health, I have a broad understanding of the varying expectations in different academic units. Finally, I will work to ensure that APT applies the standards sensibly and compassionately, such as adjusting for Covid-related interruptions affecting candidates’ progress.
