UNC Service

Since my arrival at UNC in 2009, I have served in a leadership capacity for the department of psychiatry (as Division Head of General Adult Psychiatry) and in the cancer hospital (as Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Support Program). I have also served on various university committees (e.g., Merrimon Selection Committee; Cancer Hospital Executive Committee; and School of Medicine Strategic Planning Steering Committee as Chair of the Task Force on Faculty Concerns).

Candidate Statement

Over the course of my career, I have had multiple opportunities to work in an official capacity with colleagues who have struggled professionally or faced accusations of misconduct in the workplace. These cases are typically highly charged, complex and seriously consequential (for both the faculty member and the institution). I feel strongly that formal university responses to allegations of faculty misconduct, sanctions, and adverse job actions must be fair and adhere to established University policies. In this way, I highly value close attention to “process.” Further, questions of academic freedom and free speech are growing concerns for our university and employees. I would be honored to serve on the Faculty Hearings Committee and promise to bring a sense of rigor and fairness to these important matters.
