Aimee McHale

Running for: Faculty Athletics Committee
  • Assistant Professor
  • Public Health Leadership, Gillings School of Global Public Health
  • Appointed: 2013
  • JD, St. Louis University, 1988
UNC Service

I am currently a member of the FAC and serve on the FAC's Student Athlete Welfare and Equity Committee and as the faculty liaison for fencing, and men's and women's golf . For the last two years, in my role with the FAC, I have participated in one of the CFE’s Equity in Teaching sessions to discuss best practices for faculty who have student-athletes in their classes. I am also a faculty affiliate with UNC's Program for Public Discourse, a new program aimed at fostering dialogue on difficult or controversial issues on campus and in society more broadly. I also have numerous service roles in Gillings and in my department.

Candidate Statement

I am seeking re-election to the FAC. On the FAC, I serve on the Student-Athlete Welfare and Equity Committee, which affords me the opportunity to hear the wide-ranging concerns and experiences of student-athletes (SAs) in semi-annual focus groups, and to communicate their feedback about athletic, academic and other issues to the full FAC. I have consistently advocated for expanding opportunities for SAs to participate more fully in internships, study abroad and other co-curricular activities; ending practices that perpetuate student-athlete and/or racial stereotypes and biases; developing and enforcing evidence-based COVID-19 protocols for SAs and at athletic competitions; and developing wider faculty support for SAs in their academic endeavors. I would like to continue this work, and ask for your vote for my re-election.
