UNC Service

I have chaired the Law School’s Promotion & Tenure Committee since 2017, and currently serve on Faculty Council. I was the Law School's Associate Dean for Faculty Development (2012-2015), chaired our Mentorship and Academic Affairs committees, and co-chaired our most recent Self-Study Committee. I have served on our Appointments, Admissions, and Curricular Reform committees, as well as a University Dean’s Review Committee. I also advise students and coordinate the JD/MPH Concurrent Degree Program. FInally, I have a secondary appointment as Professor of Social Medicine, and am an Adjunct Professor of Health Policy & Management.

Candidate Statement

As the Chair of the Law School P&T Committee for the past four years, I have encountered a wide variety of tenure-related topics, such as COVID-related timing concerns and lateral hiring issues. At times, the relative opacity of the University’s APT policies creates frustration for both candidates and committee members. Moreover, as a Law faculty member with many cross-campus interdisciplinary links, particularly my secondary/adjunct appointments in Medicine and Public Health, I have a broad understanding of the varying promotion and tenure expectations in different campus units. As a member of APT, I would advocate for more transparent procedures that would help guide faculty members, regardless of their campus homes, through this crucial process.
