UNC Service

I am the Oliver R. Rowe Distinguished Professor and Chief of the Division of General and Acute Care Surgery, Director of Adult ECMO, and Director of Global Surgery at the UNC Institute for Global Health & Infectious Diseases. I am also an Adjunct Professor of Public Health at the Gillings School of Global Public Health and an affiliated faculty at the UNC Injury Prevention and Research Center. I previously served on the Honorary Degree Committee(2017-2019). I am a member of the UNC SoM's Academy of Educators. I currently serve on the Blood Transfusion Committee and on the Chancellor's Global Leadership Council.

Candidate Statement

I have been actively involved across UNC's academic community in Chapel Hill and across international sites, specifically Malawi, for over 15 years. I have collaborated with colleagues across disciplines within the school of Medicine and across schools, such as Nursing and Public Health. It is these statewide, national, and international experiences that have shaped my perspective. This position will enhance what I have worked toward throughout my UNC service - to engage more faculty in the decisions that affect faculty, students, staff, alumni, and the university's overall mission. I believe that diversity of opinion and lived experiences can better inform University Leadership as we continue to teach, research and lead at UNC to better our state.
