Candidate Statement

I am running for this position because the symbiotic relationship between athletics and academics is part of what makes our campus extraordinary. By serving on this committee, I hope to deepen my involvement in campus life.
In my early twenties, I wrote about Chicago high school basketball for The Huffington Post and SLAM Magazine. I learned two important lessons from my reporting.
First, high-level prep athletes aren’t necessarily looking to make their sport a career; they consciously see an athletic scholarship as a means to a free education.
Second, not much separates a star lacrosse player from a star English student. They just have different gifts. Like a star English student, most athletes come to UNC to grow into well-rounded adults. Our job is to help facilitate that growth, put them in a position to succeed.
