UNC Service

I have been active in several aspects of service to UNC and the scientific community, mainly in student and faculty-centered service, but also connected to research as an essential component of being a faculty member. Some relevant contributions include: (1) Supporting microbiome research through the Microbiome Core. Established in 2009, it has contributed to over 200 publications. (2) As a minority female in biomedical sciences, I strive to support and uplift women through advising and mentoring. (3) I firmly believe that faculty must be involved in the university's shared governance and have served on committees to contribute to this work.

Candidate Statement

For almost 14 years, I have conducted research and supported investigators examining how our associated microbes impact health and disease. Directing a Core facility allowed me to interact with members of different departments, University-wide, and learn of the diverse obstacles of fixed-term faculty across campus. This inspired me to participate and advocate for consolidated rules and regulations for appointing and promoting nontenured faculty. As a member of the Faculty Council, I will bring my experience and long trajectory as a fixed-term faculty member, where I have witnessed the advancements made through the years. I also know what must still be accomplished to ensure equity and diversity at UNC Chapel Hill.
