Dear Colleagues.
This week, we celebrate University Day during when we honor both the founding of this university and recipients of several important awards, including the Edward Kidder Graham Faculty Service Award and Distinguished Alumna and Alumnus Awards. I look forward to applauding the outstanding 2023 awardees with you, including our colleague Dr. David J. Weber who is the 2023 Graham Award recipient.
The University couldn’t confer these awards without faculty participation in the nomination process. That is why I am writing on behalf of the Honorary Degrees and Special Awards Committee to encourage you to submit nominations for awards to be presented at a future University Day.
The awards committee is currently accepting nominations for the following two awards:
- The Edward Kidder Graham Faculty Service Award recognizes a current member of the voting faculty who has succeeded in realizing President Graham’s ambition “to make the campus co-extensive with the boundaries of the State,” in the context of the University’s modern mission to extend knowledge-based service worldwide. The deadline for nominations for is October 31, 2023.
- Distinguished Alumna and Alumnus Awards honor Carolina alumni who have made outstanding contributions to humanity in any walk of life. The deadline for nominations is October 24, 2023.

I hope you will take the time to consider and nominate faculty colleagues and alumni who are deserving of the recognition that these awards confer as well as encourage others to do the same. Nominations for both awards can be submitted online using the nomination form at this link.
The awards committee prefers to receive a detailed letter of nomination that describes a candidate’s accomplishments accompanied by a CV or similar document, if available. We seek a broad and diverse pool of extraordinary candidates, including individuals from underrepresented groups, from which to make our selections.
