Faculty Council & General Faculty Meet Friday, Sept. 7
The Faculty Council and General Faculty will meet on Friday, September 7, 2012 from 3-5 pm in the Hitchcock Room at the Sonja Haynes Stone Center. Council members are welcome to come early at 2:30pm for beverages and light snacks. The 2012 Thomas Jefferson Award winner, Joy Kasson, and the winners of the Hettleman Prizes will be honored. The chancellor, provost, and chair of the faculty will all address the Council and respond to questions. Items on the agenda include resolutions regarding tuition set aside for need-based aid, the Faculty Executive Subcommittee report recommendations and actions taken by the Chancellor to prevent future academic misconduct, and faculty solidarity with the African and Afro-American Studies department. Employee Forum Chair Jackie Overton and Student Body President Will Leimenstoll will give brief remarks, and Faculty Athletics Committee Chair Joy Renner will explain changes to the structure of the Faculty Athletics Committee in the coming year. We’ll be live-tweeting the meeting with the hashtag #FacCouncil.

Anne Queen Faculty Commons Coffee Hours Resume
Coffee hours in the Anne Queen Faculty Commons resumed on Tuesday, August 21st and will continue until the end of the Spring semester weekdays from 9-11am (except on University holidays). Faculty are welcome to enjoy freshly brewed Starbucks coffee, as well as an assortment of teas. Faculty members can access the Campus Y building every day from 7am to 11pm with your UNC One Card.
Please note that the reservation process for the Anne Queen Faculty Commons has changed and can now be initiated through an online form. If you are interested in holding an event on a weekday between 1:30 and 5pm, please fill out the new reservation form here. For events on evenings and weekends, please use the Campus Y’s reservation form.
New Online Module Teaches Students about UNC Honor System
The Student Attorney General, Committee on Student Conduct and the Dean of Student Office have worked together to create and launch an educational module about the Honor System at Carolina. All students and faculty are strongly encouraged to read through the module and become familiar with the basic policies set forth in the Instrument of Student Judicial Governance. Faculty may choose to the make the Honor System Module mandatory for students. It will be mandatory for all incoming and transfer students beginning in the fall of 2013.
AWFP Invites You to Attend Fall Reception
The UNC Association for Women Faculty and Professionals invites all women faculty to its fall reception, to be held September 27, 2012 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. in the Anne Queen Faculty Commons room at the Campus Y. Since 1978, the AWFP has offered women faculty opportunities for fun, networking and learning through social activities, seminars, discussion groups and other events. The diverse membership, expanded to include professional women in 1992, now includes faculty, researchers, administrators, librarians, communicators, fundraisers, medical and legal professionals, and other UNC faculty and staff.

Carolina Performing Arts offers One Day BOGO Sale for faculty, staff today (Thursday, 9/6)!
UNC-Chapel Hill faculty and staff can take advantage of a one-day BOGO sale on Thursday, 9/6/12 in conjunction with the Carolina Performing Arts commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the premiere of Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. The season will re-imagine, re-interpret and explore the lasting impact of the historic piece. To encourage faculty and staff to be a part of the 2012-13 season, Carolina Performing Arts is holding a one-day BOGO sale for University faculty and staff on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012 from 10am to 6pm.

Distinguished Alumna/us Award Call for Nominations (Deadline 9/21)
The Committee on Honorary Degrees and Special Awards invites your nominations for Distinguished Alumna and Alumnus Awards to be presented at the October 12, 2013, University Day ceremony. Please include appropriate biographical information and a statement in support of the nomination. Your statement should demonstrate that the nominee has made an outstanding contribution to humanity in any walk of life. Nominators often seek supporting letters from others, but the content of such letters, not their number, is what counts. Five awards will be given.
Nominees must be alumni of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This is defined as including all persons who were registered for at least one full academic year as a student in residence in any college or school of the University. In general, anyone listed in the General Alumni Association’s Alumni Directory is eligible except members of the University faculty, staff, and administration. They become eligible two years after separation from the University. The Steering Committee for the 2012-14 “Water in Our World” campus theme has issued a call for proposals for water-related programming and events. For more information or to submit ideas, please see the Water in Our World website.
University Teaching Awards Call for Nominations
Each year, UNC formally acknowledges the central role of teaching and mentoring by recognizing faculty, staff and students. The University Committee on Teaching Awards offers numerous awards based on nominations by members of our university community. Please take a moment to think of those who are deserving of these awards and nominate them via the website: http://provost.unc.edu/teaching-awards. All nominations must be submitted online. IAH Faculty Fellowship Call for Applications
IAH Faculty Fellowships provide semester-long fellowships for UNC faculty members from Arts and Sciences to pursue research and projects for publication, exhibition, composition and performance. For more information see the IAH Fellowships webpage.

AAUP Conference on Shared Governance, October 26-28, Washington, DC
The American Association of University Professors will hold its Shared Governance Conference and Workshops October 26–28, 2012 at the Liaison Capitol Hill Hotel in Washington, DC. Workshops will include discussions of new AAUP statements on the faculty role in program closures and on the role of contingent faculty in governance, as well as presidential search and evaluation, faculty involvement in budgeting, and the importance of faculty handbooks. Professor George Cohen, chair of the University of Virginia Faculty Senate, will deliver a plenary address on Saturday about the lessons to be learned from recent events at the University of Virginia.
