Candidate Statement
Education is at the center of my academic activities. My research is in physics and astronomy education research. I study students' conceptual, reasoning, and problem-solving difficulties. This research informs the development of interventions to help students overcome these difficulties. Since coming to UNC, I have taught over 6000 students. As the director of UNC's Summer Institute for College Teaching, I help organize and present a week-long professional development experience for faculty, postdocs, and graduate students to help them learn how to effectively implement active learning techniques into their classes. I also serve on CFE’s advisory board and the American Astronomical Society's Education Committee. I would like to continue to serve UNC and its educational mission by being part of the Education Policy Committee.
