UNC Service

I have served as a member of the Hussman School of Journalism and Media’s Promotion and Tenure Committee for four academic years. I have served on more than 15 doctoral student committees and mentored countless other students on research projects both inside and outside the Hussman School. I am a formal mentor to two of our junior faculty. I have written more than 25 external letters for appointments, tenure, or promotion for faculty at other universities. I believe that my prior experience with tenure and promotion reviews and my mentorship of both students and faculty make me well suited to contribute to this committee in substantive ways.

Candidate Statement

In addition to my role as Professor in the Hussman School, I am a member of the UNC’s Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, Center for AIDS Research, and Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. I collaborate extensively with colleagues across centers and departments at UNC on externally-funded research projects and student committees. My unique mix of experiences working with colleagues across centers, departments, and research areas makes me well suited to contribute to this committee. I am running for this position because I have a desire to engage in more service at the university level, and I believe I can bring an important and unique voice to the committee. I plan to provide rigorous but fair evaluative judgements on the candidate dossiers under consideration by the committee for appointments, promotions, and tenure.
