UNC Service

I have been a member or chair of various committees for the Department of Economics at UNC in my over 30 years here. They include recruiting committees for both assistant professors and for chair professors, many terms on the chair’s advisory, personnel, post-tenure review, graduate, and graduate exam committees. I have also been a formal and informal mentor to many assistant and associate professors in the department and I have been the UNC coordinator for the Duke-UNC micro theory seminar series for more than 25 years. I have served on the summer fellowship committee for the College for the past few years.

Candidate Statement

The most important decisions that departments make regards the hiring and promotion of faculty. I have been a member or chair of many promotion cases for candidates in the department of economics. In each of these cases, we analyzed the candidates research by both reading their publications and carefully considering the outside letters that were solicited. An important criterion that we used in these cases was to try, as best as we could, to project what we thought the candidate’s future productivity would be. I recognize that different disciplines have different criteria for research productivity and these need to be taken into consideration. Teaching and service are also important, since these are crucial functions of the university. I am committed to work to promote our faculty's excellence in diverse aspects.
