UNC Service

I have served on the Financial Exigency Committee (2012-2015), I was a member of the Faculty Advisory Board for the Institute for the Arts and Humanities (2016-2019), I chaired an Independent Study Task Force in 2017 and currently chair the Beinecke Scholarship selection committee, I am currently a member of the Committee on the Status of Women, and I am in my second year as chair of the Department of Linguistics. I also served on Faculty Council in 2005, and in the intervening years did a lot of department-level service (e.g. Honors advisor, Director of Undergraduate Studies).

Candidate Statement

I am eager to serve as a delegate to the UNC Faculty Assembly, because I believe that we are stronger as a university when we work together with our sister institutions within the UNC System. In recent years we have come to have an increasingly contentious relationship with the BOG, and we have experienced a number of examples of overreach or otherwise concerning decisions handed down by that body. While some of these decisions most directly affect our own campus, the actions of the BOG ultimately reflect the state of higher education policy in North Carolina and so should concern all campuses in our system. I intend to reach out to Faculty Assembly delegates from other UNC institutions to maximize our resources and work together for better support for higher education in our state.
