Nominations invited for 2010 O. Max Gardner Award; deadline is December 9, 2009
Chancellor Thorp invites nominations for the 2010 Oliver Max Gardner Award, presented each year by the UNC System Board of Governors to that member of the faculty of a constituent UNC institution “who, during the current scholastic year, has made the greatest contribution to the welfare of the human race.” The faculty Committee on Honorary Degrees and Special Awards will screen nominations from the UNC-Chapel Hill faculty, and Chancellor Thorp will transmit their recommendation to the Office of the President and the Board of Governors Committee on the Oliver Max Gardner Award. Please note that nominations must be in the chancellor’s hands by December 9, 2009.

Nominations invited for 2011 Honorary Degrees; deadline is January 20, 2010
The faculty Committee on Honorary Degrees and Special Awards invites nominations for people to be considered for award of an honorary degree at commencement in the spring of 2011. The deadline to submit a nomination is January 20, 2010.
Honorary degrees recognize people who have rendered outstanding service to humanity in the world arena, in our nation, in the American South, or in our state of North Carolina; people who have made outstanding contributions to knowledge in the world of scholarship; people whose talent and creativity in the world of the arts has enriched our lives; and people whose devotion to and support of our University merits our highest recognition.
FAQ of the Week: What is the Faculty Assembly?
It’s faculty governance at the UNC-system level. Each year, you, the Chapel Hill faculty, elect representatives from this campus to the UNC systemwide Faculty Assembly, which consists of delegates from all of the UNC system’s seventeen campuses. The Faculty Assembly was established in 1972, at the time that several campuses were “consolidated” under the UNC System. It was created at the request of then UNC President William Friday, and has been active ever since. Representation is proportional to a particular campus’s percentage of the total full-time budgeted faculty members across the system. The Faculty Assembly endeavors to meet four times a year, although recent budgetary constraints have limited the in-person meetings. The current Chair of the Faculty Assembly is our former Chair of the Faculty, Prof. Judith Wegner of the Law School. Save the Date: Association for Women Faculty and Professionals will hold holiday social gathering, December 10 at Carolina Inn
The UNC Association for Women Faculty and Professionals will hold its annual holiday social December 10th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m in the North Parlor at the Carolina Inn. Membership information will be available at the event. This is a great opportunity to meet and network informally with professional women from all over campus. Current members, past members, and anyone interested in exploring membership are invited to attend!
Parenting@Carolina Facebook page launched
A coalition of parents in the UNC community have launched at Facebook page called “Parenting@Carolina” to bring together students, faculty, and staff to “make UNC-CH a leader in supporting the needs of families in higher education.” The site offers information about campus resources and upcoming programs. Check it out by typing “parenting@Carolina” into your Facebook search box.
UNC Sakai pilot evaluation: Final report and results summary slides now available

Articles, books, or other resources of interest to faculty. This week’s selection points to the latest issue (Nov-Dec) of the AAUP magazine Academe, which is almost completely focused on various issues of faculty governance. A couple of the articles
