Campus-Wide Water Theme to Be Discussed at Faculty Council 11/18
H2O Carolina: Water in Our World will be presented to Faculty Council for discussion this Friday. The proposal advances a two year, campus-wide interdisciplinary theme for schools and departments to consider as they plan programming for 2012-2014. Council members will discuss implications of the adoption of a campuswide theme, and will likely vote in December on a resolution to endorse this idea.
Faculty Council will also discuss the annual reports of the Faculty Athletics Committee, the Faculty Grievance Committee, and the Faculty Hearings Committee and hear updates from Chancellor Thorp, Provost Carney, and Chair of the Faculty Boxill. The agenda and all reports are now online here.
Faculty Governance Requests Input on Campus Y Spaces
Campus Y leadership and the Office of Faculty Governance have designed a survey to gather information about faculty use of the Campus Y building, including the Anne Queen Faculty Commons and the Blue Ram Cafe. We encourage all faculty to answer this short survey, even if you do not currently use the space, by December 2. Click here to respond. We appreciate your participation!
Res Life Announces Faculty-Student Engagment Opportunities
Dr. Bettina Shuford, Assoc. Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, presented a range of opportunities for faculty-student engagement at the October Faculty Council meeting, including: the Scholar in Residence Program, Meals with Heels, and Living Learning Communities. Click here for more information.
Faculty Discuss Athletics at Council Forum
Faculty Athletics Rep. Lissa Broome, Faculty Athletics Committee Chair Steve Reznick, and outgoing A.D. Dick Baddour met with faculty on 11/2 to discuss faculty representatives’ roles in athletics. Faculty inquired about recent changes in the athletics department, sources of revenue for athletics, recent changes in NCAA rules, conference expansion, and ways that athletics and academics can both excel at Carolina. Reznick reminded faculty that the Athletics Committee will present their annual report at Faculty Council on Friday, November 18. Faculty Hearings and Grievance Holds 1st Orientation
On 10/10, members of faculty Hearings and Grievance Committees participated in a workshop to learn the committees’ histories and function at Carolina. Topics included handling confidential information, types of cases, procedures, conduct of a hearing, and responding to media requests. A video of the orientation can be viewed on the School of Government’s website. Chairs of both committees will briefly report to the Council on Friday.
CFE Offers New Online Resource To Faculty
The Center for Faculty Excellence has a new service called the Professional Interests Manager (PIM) designed to help the campus stay informed about professional development resources and opportunities. Faculty can log into the PIM and choose from a list of interests related to teaching, research, and leadership to receive email updates about useful websites, journal articles, and campus events related to those topics. Sakai Update: Instructors Can Now Create Courses
Spring 2012 instructors can create their course sites by logging into the “My Workspace” area and going to “Worksite Setup.” A tutorial and printable PDF of instructions is available. Spring 2012 Blackboard sites will be created by request only. To request a Blackboard site, faculty will login select the courses they would like created. 2012 semester is the last time spring semester courses will be offered in Blackboard. Campus-Wide Award Deadlines and Events
Deadline Approaching for 2012 Edward Kidder Graham Award
Given yearly beginning in 2011 on University Day, this award recognizes a member of the Voting Faculty for “outstanding service” at UNC-CH. It calls to remembrance President Graham’s ambition “to make the campus co‐extensive with the boundaries of the State,” in the context of the University’s modern mission to extend knowledge‐based service world‐wide. The faculty Committee on Honorary Degrees and Special Awards invites you to visit the Edward Kidder Graham Award page to learn about the nomination process. Deadline for nominations is November 18, 2011.

Chancellor Calls for 2012 O. Max Gardner Award Nominations
This award honors the faculty member in the UNC system who “has made the greatest contribution to the welfare of the human race” and will be presented in April, 2012. The campus deadline for nominations is December 2, 2011. Instructions for submitting a nomination are here.
2012 University Awards for the Advancement of Women
Recognize contributions to the advancement of women by one faculty member, one staff member, and one undergrad/grad student/postdoctoral scholar at UNC-CH. Nominations due November 18, 2011. Details available online.
2013 Honorary Degree Nomination Period now Open
The Honorary Degrees and Special Awards committee invites members of the university community to submit nominees “who have rendered outstanding service to humanity in the world arena, in our nation, in the American South, or our State of North Carolina; made outstanding contributions to knowledge in the world of scholarship; people whose talent and creativity in the world of the arts has enriched our lives; and people whose devotion to and support of our University merits our highest recognition.” Click here for nomination information.
