Final Council Meeting of the Year is Today! (4/13)
The final Faculty Council and General Faculty meeting of the year will take place today, Friday, April 13, 2012 from 3-5pm in the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History. Members will vote on two resolutions amending the Faculty Code of University Government and hear a proposal to remove sexual assault, harassment, and discrimination cases from the Honor System’s jurisdiction. Chair of the Faculty Jan Boxill will present a resolution on behalf of the Agenda Committee on Amendment One. The Council will also hear reports from the Educational Policy Committee and the Committee on Fixed-term Faculty. Invited guests include Taffye Clayton (Vice Provost of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs), Jackie Overton (Employee Forum Chair), and Annice Fisher (Assistant Director of Academic Engagement & Assessment). Faculty Governance Elections to Take Place April 16-23
Keep an eye on your inbox Monday, April 16th for your personalized 2012 faculty elections ballot! You will receive an email containing a link that will take you to your electronic ballot. You have until April 23rd to click the link, fill out your selections, and submit your ballot. Last year we had the highest voter turnout since 1997 and we hope to continue the upward trend. To help you make your selections, please reference the Voter Information Guide on our website. Thanks to the 107 wonderful candidates who agreed to run for open positions this year!
All Faculty Invited to May Commencement
Chair of the Faculty Jan Boxill and Faculty Marshal Valerie Ashby invite faculty to participate in the events of Commencement Weekend 2012. The Doctoral Hooding ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 12, at 10 a.m. in the Dean Smith Center. University Commencement is on Sunday, May 13 at 9:30 a.m. in Kenan Stadium, and all faculty are invited to join the Commencement processional. To do so, park in the new Bell Tower deck and gather on the second floor of the Kenan Football Center at 9:00 a.m. Full details about Commencement are available here.
CFE Calls for Faculty Volunteers for Summer Turnitin Pilot
The Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) will continue to evaluate Turnitin, a plagiarism-detection service, through the summer, and invites 20-30 faculty or other lead instructors of 2012 Summer courses to participate in the ongoing pilot. Instructors will use Turnitin for the course, complete pre- and post-surveys about Turnitin, and allow the CFE to assess students’ experiences with Turnitin. Students can choose to opt out of the pilot even if the instructor participates. If you are interested, please email Sohini Sengupta.
Deceased Faculty Honored at Council
Annually, the Faculty Council honors the legacies and contributions of active or emeritus faculty members who have died in the past year. The names of the deceased will be read aloud during the April 13th Council meeting, but you can also view the names here. Please contact our office if you notice any omissions.
Campus-Wide Events and Award Deadlines
AWFP Invites Staff and Faculty to Spring Luncheon
The Association for Women Faculty and Professionals invites faculty and staff to their Annual Meeting and Spring Luncheon on Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012 from 11:30am-1:30pm at the Carolina Inn’s Old Well Room. The keynote will be delivered by 2012 Massey Distinguished Service Award Honoree and UNC Employee Forum Chair Jackie Overton. Dr. Catherine Marshall, Professor of Educational Leadership and the 2012 winner of the Mary Turner Lane Award will be honored. Register online by April 25, 2012.
Social Science “Seed” Grants for Multidisciplinary Research
The Odum Institute will grant 2-3 awards to support the development of an innovative, multidisciplinary funding proposal in the social sciences at UNCCH. The maximum size of the grant is $15,000. The deadline for submission is April 23, 2012. Click here for information.
Carolina Launch Pad Seeks 2012-13 Applicants
UNC-CH Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to apply for the Carolina Launch Pad, the pre-commercial technology business accelerator located at RENCI. Applicants must be university faculty, students, staff, or alumni who have graduated within the past two years. The program works with ventures that have not yet secured startup funding. Applications are due by April 15.
Was South Building a “Temple of Folly”? Two Exhibits Feature History of Campus Buildings
The North Carolina Collection Gallery in Wilson Library is currently featuring an exhibit on the history of the campus built environment. “A Dialogue Between Old and New: Notable Buildings on the UNC Campus” will run through May 31, 2012. A companion exhibit focused on the evolution of the university libraries is on display in Davis Library’s first-floor atrium area. Discussions of both are in this week’s Gazette.
