Coble, Kalleberg are candidates for Chair of the Faculty
Two faculty members have agreed to run for Chair of the Faculty, a three-year position beginning July 1. Candidates are McKay Coble, Professor of Design and Chair of the Department of Dramatic Art; and Arne Kalleberg, Kenan Distinguished Professor of Sociology. The faculty elections will be held April 13-20 via a survey that will be emailed to all members of the Voting Faculty.
The University Gazette will carry a Q&A with the candidates in its elections issue, which will come out in April 1.
Faculty Council meets Friday, February 20
The Faculty Council will meet this Friday, February 20, at 3 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture & History. All faculty members are invited to attend. In addition to remarks by Chancellor Holden Thorp, topics will include reports by the Administrative Board of the Library and the Undergraduate Admissions Committee and a panel discussion on “Centers and Institutes at UNC.”

Thomas Jefferson Award nominations now being accepted (deadline is March 27)
The Committee on Honorary Degrees and Special Awards is now accepting invitations for the 2009 Thomas Jefferson Award. The deadline for nominations is March 27.
The Thomas Jefferson Award was established in 1961 and is presented annually to “that member of the academic community who through personal influence and performance of duty in teaching, writing, and scholarship has best exemplified the ideals and objectives of Thomas Jefferson.”
The award will be presented by the chancellor at the April 24 Faculty Council meeting. Nominations can be sent to the Office of Faculty Governance, Attention: Committee on Honorary Degrees and Special Awards, Campus Box 9170, or emailed to Joseph Ferrell, Secretary of the Faculty, at jsferrel@email.unc.edu.

Budget reduction impact scenarios document released
In January 2009, UNC-Chapel Hill and all the UNC system institutions were required to submit information to General Administration outlining the impact that 3 percent, 5 percent and 7 percent budget reductions would have on our operations. At the Employee Forum’s request, the Office of University Counsel has now made this report public. Athletics Department announces next Faculty-Staff Family Days
As part of an effort to attract faculty and staff to attend sporting events at UNC (besides basketball and football), the UNC Department of Athletics is sponsoring a series of events in February and March focusing on a specific sport. This Friday, February 20, lacrosse is featured. The women’s lacrosse team will take on Oregon at 5:00 p.m. and the men’s lacrosse team will face Navy at 7:30, both at Fetzer Field.
Between games, refreshments will be served in the McCaskill Soccer Center Hospitality Room. An explanation of the rules of lacrosse will be given by former Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach and Current Senior Associate Athletic Director Willie Scroggs. In addition, Men’s Coach Joe Breschi and Women’s Coach Jenny Levy will talk to the group.
The event is free, including parking at the Cobb Deck. Directions can be found on TarHeelBlue.com under the Inside Athletics link at the top of the home page. Click on “Facilities,” then “Fetzer Field.”

Faculty Staff Family Day for the baseball team will be held Saturday, March 7 at 2:00 p.m., when the Tar Heels face Clemson in newly renovated Boshamer Stadium. Faculty and staff can pick up free tickets for themselves and immediate family members 90 minutes before the game with their UNC One Card. See goheels.com for more ticket information and directions. If you’d like to attend this event, please email bclarke@unc.edu by Monday March 2 with the number in your party.
A similar event is scheduled for Tuesday, March 24, at 5 p.m. for the women’s softball team.
Computer-based training to end Feb. 28
Computer-based training, which has served Carolina in its current form since June 2005, will cease service on February 28 when its current license expires. The decision not to renew the license for this service was a difficult one, but necessary in order to achieve the level of budget cuts currently mandated. Graduate Education Professorship established, nominations sought by March 2
The Graduate School is pleased to announce the new Royster Distinguished Professorship for Graduate Education. The individual named will also serve as the Director of the Royster Society of Fellows. The term of the professorship will be three years, and the deadline for nominations is March 2. Selection will be open to any tenured, senior level professor at UNC-Chapel Hill.
