Faculty Council next meets on November 9th; Agenda to be set on October 31st
The Faculty Council’s next meeting will be Friday, November 9th, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Hitchcock Multipurpose Room of the Sonja Haynes Stone Center. All faculty are invited to attend.
If you have items you’d like considered for the Faculty Council agenda, please be in touch with Anne Whisnant (anne_whisnant@unc.edu, or 962-1671) before Wednesday, October 31st, when the Faculty Council Agenda Committee will convene to craft the agenda for the November 9th meeting.
Free coffee and camaraderie: The Anne Queen Faculty Commons at the Campus Y
The Anne Queen Faculty Commons, now open in the renovated Campus Y, provides a place on central campus for informal gatherings, meetings, and programs that encourage faculty exchange. It’s also a place for free coffee, courtesy of the Chancellor’s office, between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. daily. So get out of your office and meet a colleague for a chat in this beautiful new space!
The Commons may also be reserved for faculty-oriented programs and events. Room usage policies and reservation forms may be found here on the Faculty Governance website.
Chancellor Search Committee’s October 30th public forum invites faculty input
The search committee seeking a successor for University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Chancellor James Moeser will hold forums Oct. 26 and 30 for people to share opinions about what they hope to see in the next chancellor. The forums are open to anyone, but the search committee has designated the Oct. 26 forum for alumni, local elected officials and local residents. The Oct. 30 forum will target faculty, staff and students. Approximate times have been designated for the various groups to help the search committee organize the comments and suggestions offered by speakers.

UNC Tomorrow Commission to hold listening forum for faculty on November 2nd
On Friday, November 2nd from 3:00-4:30 p.m. at The William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education, President Bowles and his staff will hold a listening forum for faculty from campuses in the Triangle (UNC-Chapel Hill, NC State University, NC Central University, NC School of Science and Math). This forum is part of a larger initiative, called the University of North Carolina Tomorrow, that seeks to identify the key challenges facing North Carolina and decide how the state universities can best respond to those challenges.
In September and October, the University of North Carolina Commission held listening sessions in communities across the state. Over the next several weeks, the Commission will be conducting similar forums with faculty at the UNC campuses to ask for their input on the findings from the community listening forums.

The Nov. 2 forum will include remarks by President Bowles, a short video about issues facing North Carolina, a presentation by members of the http://www.nctomorrow.org/triangle-j-council-of-governments/ and comments from faculty members. Speakers are asked to limit remarks to three to four minutes. President Bowles has requested that participants share their comments on the findings by the Scholar’s Council about what they have heard in the community listening forums.
Mike Smith, Vice Chancellor for Public Service and Engagement and UNC-Chapel Hill’s liaison to the UNC Tomorrow Commission will be hosting this event on our campus. If you plan to attend, please email Laila Robbins (robbinsl@sog.unc.edu) by Tuesday, October 30, 2007.
Library seeks faculty’s proposals for Library Research Fund by November 16th
The Library is soliciting proposals for its Library Research Fund, which supports the acquisition of unusually costly titles or those in subject areas underrepresented in Library collections. It also helps to address needs of new faculty members for specialized materials. The Library has allocated $80,00 to the 2007-08 Research Fund. The Collections Committee of the Administrative Board of the Library will evaluate and prioritize all nominations. The deadline for submitting requests is November 16, 2007.

Nominations for 2008 O. Max Gardner Award due January 9th, 2008
The Chancellor invites you to make nominations for the 2008 Oliver Max Gardner Award, to be presented in May 2008. The Award recognizes “that member of the Faculty of the Consolidated University of North Carolina who, during the current scholastic year, has made the greatest contribution to the welfare of the human race.” Nominations must be in the Chancellor’s office by January 9, 2008.
A letter about the award will be sent to all faculty under separate cover in a few days.
Nominations for Faculty Mentoring Award sponsored by the Carolina Women’s Leadership Council due Jan. 18, 2008; each winner to receive $5,000
The Faculty Mentoring Awards sponsored by the Carolina Women’s Leadership Council recognize outstanding men and women faculty members who go the extra mile to guide, mentor and lead students and/or junior faculty as they make important career decisions, embark on innovative research challenges and enrich their lives through public service, teaching and meaningful educational opportunities. These awards will honor faculty-to-student mentoring and faculty-to-faculty mentoring, with one award given in each category. Each recipient will receive $5,000.
All tenured and tenure-track faculty are eligible for this award, as are fixed-term faculty who have taught at Carolina for at least three years. Visiting faculty are not eligible. Nominations may be submitted by anyone from the Carolina family, including current and former faculty, staff, and students.

Read Prof. Hunt’s speech, “International studies to what end?,” which called on the university and its faculty to seize in the 21st century “a special opportunity and perhaps responsibility – to help sort out the international tangle that the United States has gotten itself and to reinvigorate the democratic ideal of an educated citizenry engaging in genuine debate over the great issues before us.” The university, Hunt urged, should “become a more audible voice in debate and discussion in American civic life on pressing international issues.”
