Fall Welcome Reception for all faculty, Tuesday, August 28, 3:30-5:00 p.m.

The Chair of the Faculty and the Office of Faculty Governance invite you to join us for our fall welcome reception this coming Tuesday afternoon, August 28th, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. in the newly renovated Anne Queen Faculty Commons in the Campus Y.  Come have some refreshments, meet your colleagues, and see this beautiful new faculty space in the heart of north campus.

Anne Queen Faculty Commons now open in the Campus Y

A new faculty gathering space is now available in the renovated Campus Y.  Named in honor of former Y Director Anne Queen, the Faculty Commons is a perfect place for informal gatherings, meetings, and programs that encourage faculty exchange.  Free coffee is available weekdays until 1:00 p.m.  While the space is a wonderful place to meet a colleague for lunch (food is available downstairs in the Blue Ram cafe), it can also be reserved for special functions.  Room usage policies and reservation forms may be found here on the Faculty Governance website.

Faculty Council and General Faculty meeting schedules for 2007-08

The full Faculty Council and General Faculty meeting schedules for 2007-08 are online now, along with a list of all of the Faculty Council members.  While the first and last meetings of the year are always combined General Faculty and Faculty Council meetings, all faculty are welcome at any Faculty Council meeting.  Agendas and minutes are posted regularly, so you can follow along electronically even if you can’t come to the meetings.

Nominations for Distinguished Alumnus/a Awards due September 20th

The Committee on Honorary Degrees and Special Awards invites you to submit nominations for the Distinguished Alumnus/a awards, which are presented every year on University Day.  Nominations received this year will be under consideration for recognition at 2008’s celebration.  The deadline to submit nomination materials is September 20, 2007.  Full details on how to submit a nomination and a list of past winners are online here.

UNC Tomorrow

Did you know that UNC’s General Administration is conducting a statewide study called “UNC Tomorrow” to identify the needs facing our state over the next twenty years and determine how the University system can respond to those needs?  You can read about the project at here.  The page includes a listserv and a blog through which you can keep up with ongoing developments as well as a list of the members of the faculty “scholars council” that is assisting the UNC Tomorrow Commission.

UNC Faculty Assembly

In addition to our local Faculty Council here at UNC-Chapel Hill, there is also a systemwide UNC Faculty Assembly that deliberates on issues of concern to faculty across the larger UNC system.  Find our more about the Faculty Assembly’s work here.
