Dear Faculty Colleagues,

On behalf of the Advisory Committee, I invite you to nominate yourself or another faculty member to be considered as a candidate for chair of the faculty in the spring 2025 faculty election. The person we elect in April will begin a one-year term of office as chair-elect on July 1, 2025, followed by a two-year term as chair of the faculty from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2028.

To ensure full consideration by the committee, nominations must be received by midnight on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.

Any member of the voting faculty (as defined by Article 1 of The Faculty Code of University Government) is eligible to serve as chair of the faculty.

Article 3 of The Faculty Code describes the roles and duties of both chair-elect and chair of the faculty. The chair-elect serves as an ex officio member of the Faculty Executive Committee and may substitute for the chair upon the chair’s request. The year served as chair-elect affords the opportunity to learn the role of chair and make any professional arrangements needed to prepare for a two-year term as chair.

The chair position requires a significant time commitment for which work-related arrangements and support are negotiated in advance with the faculty candidate’s department or unit chair, dean, and the provost. The chair provides faculty leadership, sits on many faculty and administrative committees, convenes and presides at meetings of the Faculty Executive Committee, and serves as chair pro tempore of the Faculty Council. Additionally, the chair represents the faculty at important University events, including convocations and commencements.

The Advisory Committee seeks to identify a broadly representative pool of qualified, dedicated, and interested nominees. We urge you to join us in the effort to solicit and nominate candidates. Please consider individuals with leadership experience who can effectively communicate faculty values and perspectives, have knowledge of this campus community and understand the larger policy issues we face. Nominees should have reached a phase in their careers that enables them to commit the time, effort, and attention this leadership position requires. Past chairs of the faculty can be found here.

Nominating yourself or a colleague does not commit anyone to stand for election. The Advisory Committee will contact nominees and engage in a selection process to develop a final slate.

If you have questions about the chair-elect or chair of the faculty positions, please email me at anversen@email.unc.edu or Secretary of the Faculty Jill Moore at facultysec@unc.edu.

Sincerely yours,

Adam
