Dear Faculty Colleagues,

It has been my honor and privilege to serve you as Chair of the Faculty over the past two years. In balancing the demands of this position with those of chairing my home department and running a research lab, it has become apparent that I will not be able to do justice to all these efforts in the coming year. I have therefore decided to step down as Chair of the Faculty by the end of this semester. This decision was not easy because of my desire to continue working on the faculty’s behalf, particularly given the recent transitions in senior leadership. However, I also felt it was important to be realistic about the time I could devote, and to provide an appropriate time line for one of our many talented colleagues to take the helm as we move forward.

According to the Faculty Code, an interim chair will be appointed by the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee. Secretary of the Faculty Vin Steponaitis will share the details of this process with you soon.

Serving our campus in this way has provided such a rewarding opportunity for me to meet so many of you and to hear about your accomplishments, values and concerns, while trying to help where I could. It has been my pleasure to work with the Faculty Council, Faculty Executive Committee, Chancellor’s Advisory Committee, Faculty Assembly Delegation, as well as the members of many other committees, the Office of Faculty Governance staff, and senior leaders of our campus. Carolina is an incredible institution and I look to our future with optimism.

Sincerely,

Leslie V. Parise, PhD
Chair of the Faculty
Professor and Department Chair of Biophysics and Biochemistry
