A meeting of the Faculty Council and the General Faculty took place on December 7, 2018, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Kerr Hall 1001. A summary of actions follows.
Two resolutions were put before the Faculty Council in advance of the meeting; both were amended and passed with no dissenting votes.
- Resolution 2018-9. On Faculty Opposition to the Recommendation to House a Confederate Monument on Campus expresses the faculty’s opposition to the plan for the disposition and preservation of the Confederate statue proposed and passed by the UNC Board of Trustees on December 3. It also recommends that the BOT plan be retracted. The resolution references Resolution 2018-5. On Supporting a Statement from UNC Black Faculty on the Permanent Removal of Silent Sam from Campus, which was passed in October requesting the permanent removal of the statue and its base from the UNC-Chapel Hill campus.
- The second resolution voted on by the Faculty Council, Resolution 2018-10. On Implementing a Plan for the Disposition of the Confederate Statue states that a committee of faculty members shall be established to be directly involved in planning the disposition of the Confederate statue and all related activities.
