Faculty Council to meet Friday, January 11th

The Faculty Council will meet tomorrow in the Hitchcock Room at the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History from 3-5 pm.  Council members are welcome to come early at 2:30 pm for beverages and light snacks.  All faculty are welcome to attend.

The chancellor, provost, and chair of the faculty will address the council and respond to questions. Executive Associate Provost and Chief International Officer Ron Strauss will discuss global visiting students at UNC-CH, Prof. Rachel Willis will give an update on the just-released draft of the UNC system strategic plan, and Prof. Andrew Perrin and University Registrar Chris Derickson will give a brief presentation on the implementation of the new instructor grade reporting tool soon to be available. Both Prof. Theresa Raphael-Grimm, Educational Policy Committee Chair, and Prof. Vin Steponaitis, Committee on University Government Chair, will present resolutions on behalf of their committees. The council will receive annual reports from the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee and the Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure Committee before going into closed session to consider the Edward Kidder Graham Award recipient.  The agenda and related materials are available here.

UNC system strategic plan draft issued; faculty engagement encouraged now

The draft version of the UNC strategic plan, which has been in the works since last fall, was issued earlier this week.  The draft,  Our Time, Our Future:  The UNC Compact with North Carolina, and the report of the Faculty Advisory Committee to the strategic planning process (Our University:  Our Future)  are both available online.    Please take the time to read these important reports and provide feedback to Prof. Jan BoxillProf. Steve Bachenheimer (chair of our Faculty Assembly delegation) or Prof. Rachel Willis (member of the Faculty Advisory Committee) so they can discuss faculty concerns at the Faculty Assembly Meeting on January 18.   The drafts will also be discussed at the Faculty Council meeting on Friday, January 11.   The strategic plan is scheduled to go before the Board of Governors for final approval on Feb 8, 2013.

University Archives and Records Management Services offers variety of services to faculty

University Archives and Records Management Services (UARMS) collects paper and digital records of enduring historical value created by the university.  UARMS assists campus offices and departments with their records management needs through records retention scheduling and support, trainings, consultations, and records transfer services. UARMS can help faculty manage and preserve email, departmental records, and research data, and with depositing content into the Carolina Digital Repository, a digital archives for materials produced by the UNC community. In May 2012, a new General Records Retention and Disposition Schedule was officially adopted, replacing all of the department-specific schedules created since the Records Management Program was established in 1991. Baker Tilly and Gov. Martin release report on academic irregularities

On Dec. 20, 2012, former Gov. Jim Martin and consulting firm Baker Tilly released the results of their independent review of courses taught over an 18 year period at UNC-CH from 1994 to 2012. According to their executive summary, there were four major findings: 1) anomalous courses in African and Afro-American studies extended back to fall 1997; 2) The percentage of student-athletes enrolled in the anomalous course sections was consistent with the percentage of student-athletes enrolled in all courses offered by the department; 3) No academic misconduct or anomalies were found in other academic departments or units; and 4) Professor Julius Nyang’oro, who resigned as the department’s first chair and was forced to retire last July, and former department administrator Deborah Crowder, who retired in 2009,  were responsible. Click here to read the report and media coverage.

2014 UNC Honorary Degree nominations due January 18, 2013

The Committee on Honorary Degrees and Special Awards invites your nominations for candidates for UNC honorary degrees to be awarded at the 2014 May Commencement ceremony.  A maximum of five of these prestigious awards will be given to recognize individuals who have rendered outstanding service to humanity in the world arena, in our nation, in the American South, or our State of North Carolina; people who have made outstanding contributions to knowledge in the world of scholarship; people whose talent and creativity in the world of the arts has enriched our lives; and people whose devotion to and support of our University merits our highest recognition.

Members of the Board of Governors or staff of the University of North Carolina or any of its constituent institutions are not eligible. These persons become eligible two years after termination of such status. Awards are not conferred in absentia or posthumously.  Full information about this award, including criteria, eligibility, and the process for submitting a nomination is available on the Honorary Degrees page of the Faculty Governance website. Ueltschi Service-Learning Course Development Grants

APPLES is seeking proposals for service-learning course development grants to support Academic and Health Affairs undergraduate courses. APPLES seeks to award five $8,000 grants and three $1,500 mini-grants to develop courses that successfully integrate community-based service into the curriculum and promote the pedagogy of service-learning at UNC-Chapel Hill. UNC-Chapel Hill faculty members, adjunct faculty members or graduate instructors are eligible to apply. For more information, please visit

Faculty Mentoring Awards call for nominations


The Faculty Mentoring Awards, sponsored by the Carolina Women’s Leadership Council, recognize outstanding men and women faculty members who go the extra mile to guide, mentor and lead — whether they mentor undergraduate students, graduate students or junior faculty.  The Council has bestowed two awards every year since 2006. This year, the Council has added a third award, and specified that one will be for faculty-to-undergraduate student mentoring, one for faculty-to-graduate student mentoring, and one for faculty-to-junior faculty mentoring. Each recipient will receive $5,000.  Click here to submit a nomination.

2013 Carolina Public Service Awards call for nominations

The Carolina Center for Public Service is accepting nominations for three campus-wide public service awards honoring individual students, faculty, staff and University units for exemplary public service and engaged scholarship. Winners will be honored at a spring celebration and will receive a monetary award and framed certificate.  Click here for more information.
