The first Faculty Council meeting of 2012-13 will take place Friday, September 7, 2012, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm in the Hitchcock Multipurpose Room of the Sonja Haynes Stone Center.  As is our custom, this first meeting of the year is also a meeting of the General Faculty–that is, all faculty, not just Faculty Council members.

This meeting provides the first major opportunity for the faculty hear from Chancellor Holden Thorp since all of the revelations emerged over the summer regarding academic fraud in the African and Afro-American Studies Department.  Additionally, as they do at every meeting, Provost Bruce Carney and Chair of the Faculty Jan Boxill will offer remarks.  Faculty Athletics Committee chair Joy Renner will discuss her work plan for the committee for the coming year.

The assembled faculty will consider several important resolutions at this meeting, including two policy proposals from the Educational Policy Committee, and two resolutions related to the recent events in athletics and the AFAM department put forth by the Agenda Committee.  A fifth resolution asks the faculty to take a stand on the proposed cap on the amount of campus tuition increases that can be used for need-based financial aid.

All faculty members are invited to attend and participate, although seating is likely to be tight.  Please come early.

The full agenda for this meeting, including drafts of all proposed resolutions, is now online here.
