Starting on Monday, August 21, 2017, all students, faculty (including retired faculty) and staff will be required to use their OneCard to access the Anne Queen Faculty Commons in the Campus Y building.

This change comes in an effort to maintain a quiet, welcoming place that affords faculty the opportunity to meet with colleagues and engage in discussion of matters of current concern on campus. Recent complaints about noise and crowding in the Campus Y lobby have led the Office of Faculty Governance to explore options for trying to cut down on traffic through the room. After experimenting with signage, the decision was made to move forward with installing card readers.

Apart from events, the room’s use will be limited to faculty and staff Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Students may use the room during these hours only if they are invited and accompanied by a faculty or staff member. After normal business hours and on weekends, the room may be used by faculty, staff, and students alike.

The inside doors from the Campus Y lobby to the Faculty Commons will remain closed during normal business hours, except during events. Only faculty and staff OneCards will unlock the doors (both inside and outside) on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Faculty, staff and student OneCards will unlock the doors after 5:00 p.m. and on weekends. OneCard access after normal business hours will only be through the inside doors.

In accordance with long-standing policies governing the use of the space, the room will be kept free from reserved use until 1:30 p.m. on weekdays to assure its availability for informal gatherings and impromptu use by faculty members. Exceptions may be made when classes are not in session.

If your OneCard does not allow you to access the room as just described, please contact the Office of Faculty Governance at (919) 962-7609 or lisajean@unc.edu. The room reservation calendar and facility use policy are available on our website at https://facultygov.unc.edu/reservations/faculty-commons-at-the-campus-y/.
